Alpbachtal in Tyrol

Insider tip in the Kitzbühel Alps

The Alp River gives its name to our beautiful valley, the Alpbachtal Valley in Tyrol, a side valley of the Inntal Valley. It is a wide-spreading, green valley with mountain pastures and small villages, framed by powerful mountain peaks including four 2000 metre-high mountains: the Große Galtenberg (2,425m), the Wiedersberger Horn, the Sonnenjoch and the Standkopf. The valley is decorated with several castles and fortress ruins and the Matzen castle park.

The Alpbachtal Valley is located in the western part of Tyrol in the Kitzbühel Alps. Our neighbouring valleys are the Zillertal Valley and the Wildschönau Valley. The Alpbachtal Valley has merged with the Wildschönau Valley to make up one of the 10 largest skiing areas in Tyrol, the Ski Gem Alpbachtal Wildschönau.

The five bathing lakes – the warmest in Tyrol – helped the Alpbachtal earn its name "Land of lakes Alpbachtal"; one of the lakes is located directly in the holiday village Reith. And several natural gorges impressively display water in its wildest form...

The Alpbachtal in Tyrol is one of the valleys that has kept its quaint charm and artful handicrafts are still cultivated, especially glass blowing and wood working. Furthermore, the Alpbachtal is especially family friendly!

Let the Alpbachtal in Tyrol melt in your mouth

There are several culinary specialties in the Alpbachtal that you shouldn't miss:

  • the distinguished Alpbach beer from a one-man brewery
Josef Moser's small home brewery makes only 1,500 litres of beer: unfiltered "Kristallbräu-Bier". It was won the 1st place at the BrauBeviale! A guided tour of the brewery including a degustation is possible.
  • the Alpbachtal hay milk cheese from the cheese making dairy in Reith im Alpbachtal
The absolute temptation for cheese fans: the Alpbachtal hay milk cheese – made from milk, which has earned the Austrian seal of quality, the best silo-free hay milk from 65 dairy farmers in the region.
  • the former Brandenberg Prügeltorte
Whenever there's a family celebration in Brandenberg in the Tyrolean Alpbachtal, a "Prügeltorte" is on the table.  And even distinguished visitors like Queen Elizabeth II are treated to the Prügeltorte. The dough is spread around a "Prügel" – a conical wooden rolling pin – which is put on a spit and baked golden brown round for round over the fire – two hours by hand! Baking demonstrations at the Gasthaus Kaiserhaus.

The villages in the Alpbachtal in Tyrol

Or the 10 villages in the Alpbachtal in Tyrol we think our flower village, Reith, is the most beautiful. But we can't deny that the other pearls in the Alpbachtal are worth a visit:

  • Alpbach: All of the houses are built in the traditional wooden style. This has earned Alpbach the distinction of "Austria's most beautiful village".
  • Brandenberg: Tiefenbach and Kaiser gorge
  • Breitenbach: "European Community", natural gem Berlsteinersee lake
  • Brixlegg: Mining museum Brixlegg, Christmas market, farmer's market
  • Kramsach: 4 lakes and white water, cemetery museum, fixed-rope route
  • Kundl: Kundler gorge, Tyrol's only stone turnery, gothic pilgrimage church
  • Münster: Sun village at the Rofangebirge mountains
  • Radfeld: Holiday village at the Inn River
  • Rattenfeld: Austria's smallest town (400 residents), medieval pedestrian zone, glass blowing demonstrations, Augustiner Kloster (Museum), Rattenberger Advent, Schlossberg fortress ruins
